- A Thriving Port City
Located midway up the coastline on shore of the East China Sea, facing
north to Shanghai from across the Hangzhou Bay, Ningbo is a prosperous
port city famous for its marine, fishery, trade, tourism, manufacture,
etc. Ningbo covers an area of approximately 9,365 square kilometers
and has a total population exceeding six million people. It lies in
the subtropical zone and is blessed with an oceanic climate with four
distinct seasons. Its average temperature is 16 degrees Celsius. Travel
from Ningbo to Shanghai is approximately thirty minutes by plane, and
three and a half hours by express bus or by train. The soon-to-be-completed
Trans-Hangzhou-Bay Bridge, the longest in Asian, will reduce bus travel
to Shanghai to under two hours. Accessible by water, land and air, Ningbo
has established itself as a world-recognized Chinese port with over
100 billion tonnage of goods passing through it each year. The Ningbo
Beilun Port has shipping links with 493 ports in 84 countries and regions
across the world.
As one of the 5 earliest opened port cities in ancient China, Ningbo
was also a starting point of the famous "Silk Seaway." There are still
some relics of foreign embassies and churches in this city.
- Tourist Resources
Ningbo has a treasure of culture and arts with over 225 historical landmarks,
a number of which are state protected. The 7,000-year-old Hemudu Cultural
Relics are recognized as the cradle of the ancient Chinese civilization.
Tianyi Pavilion is the oldest private library in China. The relics of
Sakyamuni are well preserved in the Dagoba of the Asoka Temple. The
Liang-Zhu Cultural Park is a memorial to the widespread Butterfly Love
story of the ancient Chinese "Romeo & Juliet." Xikou, a suburb town
of Ningbo, most famous as the native place of Chiang Kai-shek, attracts
millions of visitors from all over the world each year.
- Cultural Diversity
With its progress of internationalization, Ningbo has developed some
cultural and economic activities with its own flavor, Ningbo International
Fashion Festival, China Consumer Commodities Expo, China Fishery Opening
Ceremony, Xu Xiake Tourist Opening Ceremony, China Liang-Zhu Marital
Customs Festival, etc. In addition, Ningbo is famous for its sea food,
sweet dumplings, honey peaches, thousand-layer cakes, etc. The renown
"Gang of the Overseas Ningbonese" has made great contribution through
donation and investment to the development of Ningbo. Ningbo has become
a hot land for foreign investment.
